Fostering the improvement of beef cattle in Virginia
Virginia BCIA was formed in January 1955 with the primary purposes of genetic improvement of beef cattle, and conducting educational and promotional work related to beef cattle improvement.
The association membership consists of both purebred and commercial beef producers from Virginia and surrounding states. The association Board of Directors consists of 10 members representing both seedstock and commercial cattlemen. Virginia BCIA is a state member organization of the Beef Improvement Federation -- the national organization focused on improvement of beef cattle genetics through education, standardization and linking industry, extension and research.
Virginia BCIA coordinates and manages the state bull test program and associated sales. Currently, bulls are developed at two locations (Culpeper and Southwest), with three development groups and two annual sales. The bull tests and sales have been the mainstay of the organization since it was formed and continue to provide bull development, performance testing and marketing opportunities for breeders. Additionally, these sales have a strong reputation as a source of proven, dependable genetics in the region and beyond. Virginia BCIA also supports and conducts educational programming in the area of beef cattle genetics and management, and represents the interests of the seedstock sector through participation in state organizations.
